“A” Fat

The highest amounts of A fats are found in many vegetable oils: safflower, soy, corn, peanut, and canola. These omega-6 fats contain an essential fatty acid called linoleic acid—LA. They are “essential” because we require a certain amount and the body can’t make them, so we must eat them for optimal health. When we do, LA is converted to other fats, including GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), with the end result being the group 1 eicosanoids. These have powerful anti-inflammation effects, reduce pain and the risk of many problems, and prevent chronic illness throughout the body. Common dietary supplements of omega-6 products that contain high amounts of GLA include black-currant seed, borage, and primrose oils.

A serious potential problem, as noted above, is that A fats can convert to B fats and group 2 eicosanoids, causing chronic inflammation, pain, and other problems associated with this imbalance.
