CHAPTER 23
ANATOMY OF AN INJURY—
Physical, Chemical, and Mental
Every athlete’s worse nightmare is to become injured. And yet many athletes believe injury is part of the game. While this may be true in contact sports such as football and boxing, this type of trauma typically does not occur in most endurance sports. Serious bike accidents are a noticeable exception, but usually, for endurance athletes, an injury means something went wrong with their body. As such, most injuries are preventable.
The big picture begins with the simple question, what really is an injury?
Most of us have grown up with a very simplistic view of an injury; you overwork part of your body and it gets hurt. For the endurance athlete, an injury should never happen. Even twisting an ankle on a rugged trail run may occur because of some preexisting imbalance in your physical, chemical, or mental fitness and health.
I categorize athletic injuries as three basic types: physical, chemical, and mental injuries. While they overlap most of the time, I will discuss each separately. Let’s dissect a typical injury to find out where injuries come from.
