“Vitamin” D
Another hormonelike compound that significantly influences endurance is vitamin D. This compound technically is not a vitamin; it’s sometimes called a pro-hormone because it has such powerful hormonelike effects. This substance is so important for athletes than an entire chapter is dedicated to understanding it, and I will just mention its importance here because it’s so vital. Vitamin D is produced in our body through the sun’s exposure to cholesterol in the skin, with the liver and kidney playing important regulatory roles. In turn, vitamin D helps regulate bone, brain, and immune health, muscle function and many other actions. Without the sun, our body’s vitamin D content can often fall far below acceptable levels, affecting many aspects of our health and endurance performance.
