Heart

In the heart, fat is the major fuel for cardiac muscle at rest. During exercise, however, lactate serves as a key source of energy for the heart. Here, lactate use increases proportionally with rising heart rates and increased lactate levels. Lactate may provide 60 percent of the energy for cardiac muscle contraction during training, with other potential energy from sugar (glucose).

Poor lactate metabolism, which may be due to various health problems, including those triggered by poor diet, is associated with various types of heart disease, and occurs in diabetes. Similar reductions in lactate metabolism in the heart are also seen in so-called normal aging.
