Conclusion

It is easy to get seduced by the hype associated with each year’s new crop of running shoes. But your most prudent path is to steer clear of the bold, extravagant claims offered by the shoe companies. One of the greatest marathon runners of all time, Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia, who trained barefoot, won the 1960 Olympic marathon running barefoot. Other stories of barefoot runners include South African sensation Zola Budd, a cross-country and middle-distance track athlete who also trained and raced without shoes. This is not to suggest that everyone reading this book throw away their shoes and become natural runners. That too can be just as problematic as wearing the wrong kind of shoes.

You need to experiment with different shoes and styles, while continuing to make adjustments and self-assessments. Don’t wait until an injury occurs before making a change. Your feet are quite adaptive. Humans, to a great extent, owe their survival as a species to their feet. Forty thousand years ago, we left Africa by foot and have been moving ever since.
