Chemical Stress

Many chemicals from our environment can adversely affect the body’s natural chemistry and cause stress. This can adversely affect your immune system, intestines, breathing, heart rate, and other areas. Dietary and nutritional imbalances such as too much sugar or too little vitamin D, for example, could be chemical stresses. In addition, drugs obviously influence body chemistry; examples of bad stress include excess caffeine or the side effects of prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Other sources of chemical stress include chemicals in the air—second-hand smoke, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and many others. Reducing harmful chemicals from air, water, and food, and improving diet quality are key ways to reducing stress. Chemical stresses can also affect physical and mental-emotional problems.
