Day 238: Put the period after embedded parenthetical comments.
To explain or elaborate on some point in your sentence, you might conclude with a comment inside parentheses. Consider this sentence.
“The new furniture will arrive on Monday (most likely in the afternoon).”The entire parenthetical comment is embedded in the sentence. It is not a separate sentence. The period needs to follow the closing parenthesis. Simple. Here is another example.
“We upgraded our software (the new version is more stable).”Although the parenthetical comment could be written as a separate sentence, in this case it is embedded in the main sentence. Thus, the period goes after the closing parenthesis.
