Day 285: Place commas around interpolated asides.
Interpolated asides? An interpolated aside is a word or phrase that interjects the writer’s opinion or some qualifier into the sentence. Perhaps some examples would help. These 3 sentences each contain interpolated asides.
“He was, perhaps, the best mayor in the history of the city.”“The president is, in my opinion, doing a great job.”
“The movie, I am sure, will fail at the box office, though, as we have seen, critics tend to like bad movies.”
The term interpolated aside is, most likely, new to some subscribers, but, I believe, they are simple to understand. Separate the interpolated aside from the rest of the sentence with commas. (You noticed, I hope, the commas in the samples above.)
