Small Intestine

Following digestion in the stomach, food passes into the small intestines for the completion of digestion and the absorption of nutrients. The small intestine, with its finger-like projections called villi, is capable of pulling nutrients from the now well-digested foods. Certain portions of the small intestine absorb specific nutrients as they pass. Once nutrients are made available through the action of digestion, they can now be absorbed into the bloodstream for transport to the liver and throughout the body.
