Excess Water and Low Sodium
In some athletes, the body does not properly regulate water and sodium. The result is that the body holds too much water. In some athletes, this abnormal fluid retention results in diluting the blood’s sodium levels, potentially causing abnormally low sodium, a condition called hyponatremia.
Various theories exist as to why this happens. Some think it is due to abnormal hormone actions or the over consumption of water (often caused by the abnormal thirst that accompanies this problem). My contention is that athletes who are optimally fit and healthy will effectively regulate water and sodium; those who are not can have an overload of water sometimes seen only following endurance events, although a similar condition, albeit less extreme, may occur after long a training session. Abnormal hormone function, including those in the adrenal glands and the brain, which regulate water and sodium, may be a common cause of these problems.
