Sodium Replacement

The use of sodium during competition, added to water, carbohydrate drinks, or by tablet, can help many athletes, especially in long endurance events, as sodium loss can still occur in a healthy athlete due to high stress. Consuming sodium helps replace these loses, helps maintain hydration, and promotes the desire to drink water. Significant losses can occur in athletes with adrenal dysfunction—these individuals should not be competing if they have adrenal dysfunction affecting sodium regulation.

Question: Is table salt more effective than sea salt for sodium replacement? Do you also recommend eating a bag of potato chips if you feel in need of salt, say, on a long bike ride?
Answer: I use sea salt for all cooking and table use. It has a similar amount of sodium as plain sodium chloride, although often slightly less because it also contains many other minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and others in small amounts. You can also use sea salt in your water bottle. I always suggest carrying salt tablets (sodium chloride) during your long ride as this is a better way than potato chips to get sodium. Or, add sodium to your water bottle before starting your ride. Potato chips often contain other chemicals besides salt, and potatoes are a starch that requires digestion—something your gut may not do well, causing bloating.
