The Brain

Let’s start with the brain. It is the most important part of your athletic body, the one most responsive to training and necessary for competition, and the one most neglected. All training and competition begins in the brain. And the brain is not an isolated body part but a key component of the entire nervous system, which includes the spinal cord and all the nerves going to muscles, bones, joints, organs and glands, the intestines, and every square millimeter of the body. All physiological activities are influenced in some way by the brain. The brain also protects us from attempting to exceed our physical limitations; it is the real reason we slow down during a race—or even drop out.

There are many ways we can help our brain function better. In general, this is best accomplished by being a more fit and healthy athlete. For example, the brain is more than 60 percent fat, and the fats we eat influence the types of fats in the brain. Even stimulation of the brain by music, to help produce better brains waves, can help the brain work better.
