Anaerobic Muscles

The anaerobic fibers come in different types. Some, for example, have a combination of aerobic and anaerobic quality. These fibers are very important in endurance training and competition. When these fibers are highly developed, they are much like a powerful aerobic fiber. Developing their aerobic quality further improves endurance, and most especially what I call “aerobic speed”—the ability to go faster with the same or less effort.

Diet can indirectly influence our body to use more anaerobic muscles. For example, increasing the levels of the hormone insulin, often by consuming products containing refined sugar, can increase anaerobic activity because aerobic function can be significantly reduced (through diminished fat burning). Training obviously can also influence which muscle fibers are used, with harder, anaerobic training promoting more anaerobic muscle function and reduced aerobic function.
