CHAPTER 24
REHABILITATING AND SELF-ASSESSING YOUR PHYSICAL INJURY
I have never actually kept count of the number of athletic physical injuries I have treated in thirty years of private practice. That number is certainly well into the thousands. From my personal experience, the most common causes of injury are these three: over- and improper training, over-supported and improper footwear, and muscle imbalance. Fortunately, the majority of these injuries could be successfully treated, often with positive results of immediate relief while the athlete was still in my office. Othertimes, recovery took several days or weeks. I found that when a patient addressed certain lifestyle, fitness, and health needs, he or she would typically mend more quickly.

There are at least three ways the body can mend itself from a physical injury:
The first remedy is by the body itself. This occurs often and without you even consciously being aware of a problem or the body’s correction. It could be that the problem is relatively minor and early in the process of a particular injury. This ongoing routine of healing yourself can be helped greatly by being as healthy as possible, enabling the body to best accomplish self-correction.
The second way to fix your own problem is by consciously taking some specific action based on clues by the body informing you that there’s a problem—an aching joint, a painful muscle, or any number of signs and symptoms the body creates. These clues are very important to consider.
A third way to correct an injury is with the help of a health-care professional—the subject of this book’s final chapter.
