Excess Stress

Excess stress reduces fat burning, increases insulin, and causes other metabolic problems that promote the storage of fat. It’s not just the amount of stress in your life but how your body adapts that’s most important. An abnormal level of the adrenal gland’s stress hormone—cortisol—is one of the best indications that your body is not adapting well to stress. This is best measured by testing the level of cortisol in saliva four times throughout the day (see chapter 7). This type of problem is often associated with increased belly fat, something you’ll be alerted to as you regularly measure your waist.
