Nerves
Within the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other soft tissues of the foot are important nerve endings that sense all movement, pressure, and body position. This information is sent to the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain) so we can respond appropriately to activity of the foot. Next to the spine, the foot has more nerve activity than any other region of the body. Pain is also relayed from the feet to the brain through nerves. Pain fibers are located in most structures of the foot, including the covering of the bones. During injury, the intensity of the pain does not necessarily relate to the severity of injury, as sometimes a relatively minor injury can elicit great pain because of the sensitivity of the foot.
