Inversion and Eversion

The foot can rotate inward and outward. The inward rotation is called inversion, and results in the sole of the foot turning inward. The muscles that accomplish this are the tibialis posterior and anterior. The outward rotation is called eversion, and the sole of the foot is turned out. The peroneus muscles are important for eversion.

The movement of inversion and eversion takes place in the joints between the talus and calcaneus bones. Pain during these specific movements may indicate a problem with the talus and the muscles that support it, typically the tibialis posterior and sometimes tibialis anterior.
