Sizing Your Foot
The majority of people in the Western world probably wear shoes that are too small. Certainly in my practice, where for over thirty years I looked at every patient’s shoes and their feet, that was the case. In many situations I would measure the foot and the shoe to show athletes how poorly their shoe fit their foot.
Today’s shoe sizes include three popular but different length-sizing systems depending on where the shoes were made. These systems include sizes for shoes made in the United Kingdom (U.K.), which originated in the late 1600s; American (U.S.), originating in the late 1800s; and the Continental or Paris Point metric method, originating in the late 1600s. Other sizing systems also exist. More recently, the Mondo Point system was proposed to replace all other systems. This is based on a simple length and width measurement in millimeters. It would be a great benefit to consumers, but it will probably never be accepted by the shoe industry since it would put all shoe sizes on the same playing field, making marketing—and deception—more difficult.
