Brain
In the brain, lactate is very important in supplying glucose to brain cells (neurons) during exercise, when a significant amount of blood is normally diverted away from the brain to working muscles. In addition, lactate rather than glucose may be the primary and preferred energy source during neuronal activation (brain activity) at all times. Lactate is also produced by certain other brain cells (astrocytes) for use by other nearby neurons.
