When trying on shoes, wear the socks you would normally wear in them. Socks are not necessary but are mainly for added comfort, especially in avoiding blisters. Like shoes, socks can be too tight, contributing to foot stress. For most situations, socks should be thin and not tight. Thicker socks may require a half-size larger shoe.
Which style of socks you wear—low-cut or above the ankle—and what they’re made of—natural fibers (my preference) or synthetics—is up to you. But, like shoes, make sure they fit well; and be careful to avoid the sock interfering with shoe fit.

For these and other shoe problems, making the change to flat shoes or even being barefoot, as natural as that is, makes your foot feel rather odd and may sometimes be uncomfortable. After all, your feet have been addicted to over-support and have become weak. If you’re suddenly without that support you feel, well, naked. This does not mean that flatter shoes or being barefoot is a stressful state because you don’t feel as good; rather your feet have changed because of the kinds of shoes you’ve worn.

For many people, weaning off bad shoes may take at least one extra measure. First, look at the highest heel height of a current shoe. Compare this to a lower heel or a flat shoe. Your first step in weaning off bad shoes may be to wear a shoe that’s about half to three-quarters less in height than the height of the one you currently wear. Try wearing a shoe with this height heel for a few days to make sure your feet don’t become painful. If there is pain, you’ll require two extra steps and have to wean slower by wearing a shoe whose heel is only one-quarter to half the height of what you’re used to wearing before going to one that is half to three-quarters. In some cases, just removing the insert in your current shoe is a good first step to better feet.

Whether you need to take one or two steps in making the transition from bad to good shoes, it may only take a month or two to make the appropriate adaptations to the new foot position. For others, it may take longer. Still others may need assistance from an appropriate healthcare professional. Rely on the feet feeling good for at least a week or two before progressing to the next step. Once you’ve weaned down to a more flat shoe, you’ll wonder how you survived the others.
