Foot Balancing

Poor foot-sense is a common problem, and the associated imbalance can also affect the knee, hip, pelvis, spine, and areas up into the neck and head. Restoring balance is relatively simple using the three techniques above: being barefoot, soft taping, and massage. Increasing communication between the foot and brain is the goal of this potent therapy.

Many people are unable to balance themselves on one foot for more than a few seconds. This is usually due to poor communication between brain and foot. Try this: with bare feet, stand straight, looking forward with feet close together. Lift one foot by bending and lifting your knee up slightly, and balance yourself on the other foot. You should be able to do this easily for thirty seconds or more. If you can’t perform this action, start with attempting to balance on one foot for as long as you can, even if just for a few seconds. Doing this daily can gradually improve the communication between feet and brain. In some individuals, significant imbalances in the foot, especially with certain muscles, may not allow being on one foot for more than a few seconds. Being barefoot, soft taping, and massage may help correct this problem or, in some cases, a healthcare professional may help.

With better balance comes the ability to stay on one foot even longer, and you may be able to perform other actions while on one foot, such as rubbing the foot that’s elevated, using a massage as discussed above, combing your hair, or other simple activities. All this will further improve balance by training the feet to communicate better with the brain—and this will help overall balance throughout the body. Make this therapy a regular routine, such as after a shower—when drying your feet, spend extra time by holding one foot up to include a short massage.

You may note that standing on one foot with over-supported, thick shoes is more difficult due to the restriction of foot-brain communication. However, the more foot-sense you have, the easier this will be as well.
