Acute Foot Problems

For acute foot problems—recent injuries such as a fall, twisted ankle, or stubbed toe—the traditional RICE remedy of rest, ice (or cold), compression, and elevation can be very effective.

Rest was previously discussed—when your foot needs rest, nothing is better. Rest can prevent further damage following injury and give your body the time and energy it needs to heal.

The use of cold and ice is reviewed below.

Mild compression can help reduce swelling, especially when there are broken blood vessels. Cold compressions should be applied carefully, so as not to further traumatize the area. Even the weight of an ice pack can be enough compression.

Elevation is best done by putting your foot up on your desk, lying on the floor with your foot on the couch, or lying in bed with your foot elevated on pillows. This helps prevent excess fluid from building up in the area of injury and if there are blood vessels broken, helps speed the repair process.
