Cool Bath
Another method of cooling the foot is a cold bath. This is also a safe and effective form of cyrotherapy, and is often more therapeutic than using ice. A large bucket or small foot tub works well. Place your foot in cold water so it is completely submerged. Add enough ice to prevent the water from getting warm. However, do not fill the tub with ice. Depending on the temperature of the water, you can keep your foot immersed for five to twenty minutes. A deeper bath can also cool the muscles of the leg, which often influence the foot. A deep cold bath that cools the leg muscles is often the best way to improve overall function in the foot and can be more therapeutic than ice placed only on the area of discomfort.
While generally used for acute problems, a cold bath can be very helpful for chronic problems not associated with inflammation. A cold bath can improve muscle balance, especially when you cover the leg up to the knee with cold water. A moderately cold bath can also help recovery from exercise or even a day of wearing bad shoes. In this situation, your feet are tired and hot—even a five-minute cool bath can make your feet feel fresh and alive.
