Contraindications of Heat
When in doubt about using heat, avoid it. You can too easily do more harm than good. Do not use heat when you have an acute injury. Avoid heat on an area that is inflamed, swollen, or bruised. In almost all these situations, the foot will feel warm—an indication to use cold, not hot. Also avoid heat with any skin disorder, diabetes, circulatory problem, or any open wound. As mentioned above, heat can worsen an already abnormally inhibited muscle.
