CHAPTER 33
MEASURING YOUR FITNESS AND HEALTH
No matter where you find yourself on the road to endurance, you will want to keep track of changes affecting your body. Staying vigilant will also help you become more intuitive about your body, allowing you to successfully detect and address signs and symptoms as they gradually develop. You don’t want to wait until you develop more obvious problems before realizing there’s something wrong.

To help you improve your own self-assessment, I have previously outlined the importance of the MAF Test (see chapter 4) as well as the importance of heart-rate variability, but here are some other general tests, most of which you can easily perform at home. It’s important that you record all the test results by keeping track of them in your training diary.
I must emphasize, however, that none of these tests are meant to replace the ones a health-care practitioner may perform. And while each one may be important, they are most accurate when considered as a group, especially in conjunction with other standard diagnostic tests done by a physician. Additionally, the result of one test in isolation may not be as meaningful as seeing the same test results over an extended period of time.
