Body Fat—Measure Your Waist

As I have mentioned earlier, the most simple and practical way to calculate changes in body fat is to periodically measure your waist with a tape measure at the level of the umbilicus, or the belly button. Unfortunately, you can’t dictate where fat loss occurs first. Nor can you spot reduce by doing countless sit-ups or crunches. The belly fat won’t burn off that way. But as you burn more body fat, you will notice that your clothes are fitting more loosely. People will also tell you that you look thinner, often noticing it first in your face. Since bathroom scale weight is mostly a measure of water, the measurement of fat, which is what most of us need to know, can’t be determined accurately on the scale. It’s not unusual for an athlete to gain body fat as reflected in a larger waist size, but show no weight gain on the scale.
