Body Temperature

There are at least three ways of using a thermometer to measure your body temperature. One way is to take the temperature under your tongue, a second is taking a rectal temperature, and another method is checking the temperature under your arm (also known as the axillary temperature). The axillary temperature is best taken in the morning. The normal temperature under the arm ranges from 97.8 to 98.2°F (36.5 to 36.7°C). There are times when one or more methods are best, and the results—normal, high, or low—indicate various aspects of body function.

The oral, under the tongue temperature normally is 98.6°F (37°C), with rectal temperatures about 1°F (0.6°C) higher than oral readings. Normal daily variations of perhaps a few tenths may exist, with morning readings being the lowest and late-afternoon temperatures the highest. Nighttime temperatures may also drop slightly, which helps stimulate sleep onset.
