Elevated Temperature

Temperatures above normal may indicate inflammation, infection, or other problems. In the very young and elderly, and in some alcoholics, infections or inflammation may actually lower body temperature. In athletes, an abovenormal temperature may indicate training stress or other problems, and the need for rest—a strong indication to cease all training until the problem is found or the temperature returns to normal. The only exception would be immediately after training or competition. Some athletes can have very high rectal temperatures of up to 105°F (41°C) after a hard 5K running race, or following any high intensity activity. This elevation in temperature starts to return to normal levels within minutes of finishing the race. Increases in body temperature reflect the normal compensation by the body. In fact, increases in body temperature parallel oxygen uptake and exercise intensity. Exercise at 50 percent of VO2max can raise temperatures to about 99°F (37.3°C), with intensities of 75 percent elevating temperatures to about 101°F (38.5°C). Even those working in a very physical job, people under emotional stress, and active children may also show slightly elevated temperatures.
