How to Use This Book

The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing will help you individualize your own program. Every athlete has unique needs, and no single program will work for everyone. Most importantly, your primary concern should never be short-term; instead, your focus should always be long-term. By doing so improvements in performance should be consistent for years to come, despite your age or gender.

I’ve set up this book the same way I personally worked with an athlete—which was one-on-one. Beginning with a general overview, I define common terms in endurance sports, as well as describe some of the key body systems, such as muscle, metabolism, and the brain. I then show you how to put all these ideas into practice with training, racing, and self-testing. Diet, nutrition, and other topics follow, and with each new chapter you’ll easily be able to build on a solid understanding. To facilitate this learning process, I have included a number of fitness and health surveys on topics ranging from hormones and stress to diet.

You will also come across brief case histories of some of my former patients and athletes, personal perspectives from those who have followed the tenets of my program, and questions visitors have submitted to my Web site at www.PhilMaffetone.com.
