Flexibility Is Different from Stretching
Flexibility refers to the relative range of motion allowed by the muscles around a joint. This is related to the tension in the muscles that move or restrict the joint. Muscle balance may be the most important aspect of flexibility, with muscle imbalance producing reduced flexibility in a given joint. Overall, a healthy body is more flexible.
Aerobic function improves flexibility because of its effect on muscle function. Those with a greater aerobic base generally have more flexibility—not too much or too little. Those with too much flexibility also risk injury as the muscles allow joints to move too far from their normal ranges of motion.

Too much or too little flexibility is associated with injury. The risk of injury is also increased if an imbalance in joint flexibility exists between left and right, front and back, or sides of the body.
